Sateliot and Turkcell bring IoT connectivity to Türkiye

Sateliot, the operator of a 5G IoT satellite constellation, and Turkcell have successfully completed a field demonstration of 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) IoT connectivity via satellite in both Barcelona and Istanbul, marking an important milestone in the expansion of satellite-enabled cellular connectivity.

The demonstration was conducted to validate standards-based 5G NB-IoT NTN connectivity using Sateliot’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation while showcasing its seamless integration as an extension of Turkcell’s terrestrial mobile network. The successful trial confirmed that cellular IoT devices can remain continuously connected even when moving beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure, automatically switching between mobile and satellite networks without disrupting service.

The breakthrough is expected to create new opportunities for digital transformation in sectors where reliable connectivity remains a challenge. Industries such as agriculture, logistics, energy and emergency response—areas seeing rapid digital adoption across Türkiye-stand to benefit from uninterrupted monitoring of assets, infrastructure, and operations, even in remote or underserved regions.

By combining terrestrial and satellite connectivity, the solution allows enterprises to extend network coverage without replacing existing IoT devices, ensuring a smoother and more cost-effective transition toward connected operations.

Following the successful demonstration, both companies said they will continue exploring future deployments aimed at strengthening a more inclusive and resilient IoT ecosystem capable of supporting the next phase of digitalisation.

Gianluca Redolfi, CCO of Sateliot, said: “This project demonstrates that satellite connectivity can be seamlessly integrated with the mobile network. For the end user, it means that their cellular IoT devices continue to function in both mobile and satellite networks, with the same cellular device.”

Prof. Dr. Vehbi Çağrı Güngör, Chief Network Technologies Officer of Turkcell, added: “With this collaboration, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation, development, and digitalisation of strategic sectors in Türkiye, enabling new IoT services.”
