Saudi Arabia was elected to the Science and Technology Development Committee (CSTD) for the 2027–2030 term; reflecting its strong leadership in shaping the global directions and policies in science, technology and innovation.
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) stated that the Kingdom’s election reflects its active contribution to global discussions on emerging technologies, data governance, and artificial intelligence, as well as its notable progress in the technology sector and its support for the SDGs. The Kingdom’s membership will involve following up on the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the Global Digital Compact (GDC), in addition to contributing to the development of relevant international recommendations submitted to the United Nations General Assembly for adoption.
This achievement was realized in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing the Kingdom’s role as an active international partner within the UN ecosystem, especially in communications, technology, and space. The Kingdom will also continue to exchange expertise with member states and international organizations, contribute to shaping a sustainable global digital environment, and strengthen its global competitiveness and leadership. Saudi Arabia represented by CST, previously chaired the 25th session of the committee in 2022, underscoring its strong international standing and confidence placed in its leadership in digital domains.
CSTD established in 1992 and composed of 43 member states, serves as a key advisory body to the United Nations General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on issues related to science, technology, and their impact on development. It also responsible for formulating recommendations, guiding principles, and policies to support developing countries, in addition to monitoring the implementation of the outcomes of WSIS and GDC.
