Afghanistan launches pilot 5G internet service in Kabul

Taliban’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology says it has launched fifth-generation (5G) internet services in Kabul for the first time on a pilot basis, marking a major step in the country’s telecommunications development.

The ministry announced on Wednesday that the capacity of 74 telecommunications antennas in Kabul has been upgraded to 5G technology as part of a trial project.

Officials said the initiative is currently in its experimental phase and will be expanded to other parts of the country once infrastructure development is completed and the pilot phase is successfully concluded.

The development was discussed during a meeting between Hamdullah Naumani and Aliullah Sarwari, head of Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC), one of Afghanistan’s major telecom operators.

During the meeting, both sides discussed expanding telecommunications coverage, improving services in remote areas, and enhancing overall service quality across the country.

According to Afghan Wireless officials, 46 new telecom sites have been constructed and put into operation since the beginning of 2026, while 186 additional sites are currently under construction to further strengthen network coverage.

Company representatives also expressed appreciation for what they described as continued support from the ministry’s leadership in facilitating operations and improving telecommunications services nationwide.
