Equinix opens fourth IBX data centre

Equinix announced that it has opened its fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Mumbai to support high-performance workloads and hybrid multicloud deployments in India.

Equinix said it has invested over US$95 million in the new facility, MB3, which is liquid-cooled, occupies close to four acres of land, and provides more than 1,370 cabinets of capacity at launch. The facility is designed to scale to more than 5,475 cabinets when fully built out.

Equinix also said MB3’s scalable, high-density, and energy-efficient design supports AI and machine learning workloads, data-intensive applications, and next-generation digital services.

MB3 is located on the same Mumbai campus as MB1, MB2 and MB4 and is interconnected via dedicated dark fiber with all three, as well as Equinix’s CN1 data centre, which was launched in Chennai in September last year.

Equinix said its Mumbai and Chennai data centres provide a robust cloud ecosystem for customers in India, including native on-ramps to leading cloud service providers such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud and SFDC, among others. Enterprise customers can also use the Equinix Fabric interconnection service to dynamically connect to multiple clouds, partners and providers on demand.

Equinix India MD Manoj Paul said the launch of MB3 aligns with a pivotal moment for India’s digital economy, which is on track to reach US$1 trillion by 2027–2028, propelled by the rapid expansion of digital services and digital public infratructure (DPI) platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, and ONDC, as well as growing AI and cloud adoption in the country.

“As enterprises embrace hybrid multicloud and prepare for AI inferencing at scale, seamless interconnection between businesses, network service providers and hyperscalers becomes essential,” he said in a statement. “The launch of MB3 comes at exactly the right time, providing the ecosystems, interconnection density and scalable capacity needed to power India’s next wave of digital expansion.”

Equinix says it has invested over US$365 million across India so far, with its Mumbai and Chennai campuses providing a combined capacity of more than 4,725 cabinets.
