Equinix announces renewables deal in Brazil

Global data centre solutions provider Equinix has announced a renewable energy deal in Brazil with Auren Energia, an energy generator in the country that claims 100% renewable production. The contract is scheduled to begin this year.

Equinix will off-take energy from two wind farms in the country in a deal that, according to the Data Centre Dynamics website, will cover a substantial portion of Equinix's energy needs in Brazil.

Indeed, this power purchase agreement (PPA) is described by Equinix as essential to help provide a long-term solution in guaranteeing the supply of clean and renewable energy in Brazil.

Equinix says on its website that it is committed to using energy efficiently and transitioning from emission-intensive sources to clean, renewable alternatives. Its aim is to operate with 100% clean energy by 2030, having reportedly reached 96% in 2024. In Brazil, it has already achieved full renewable energy coverage.

Auren Energia is the third-largest energy generator in Brazil. The company operates in nine states with 39 assets and a total installed capacity of 8.8GW, encompassing wind, solar and hydroelectric sources.

Data Centre Dynamics explains that Equinix entered Brazil in 2011, when it acquired a majority stake in a local operator alongside a private equity firm. It acquired the rest of the company in 2014.

Today, Equinix operates six data centres around São Paulo and three around Rio de Janeiro.
