The Egyptian National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has granted Mercedes-Benz Egypt Trading licenses to provide Internet of Things (IoT) services for vehicles in Egypt, Al Youm Al Sabea reported on February 25.
Mercedes-Benz Egypt is a key regional hub for the German automaker, managing a robust network of authorised dealers and a major logistics centre in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).
The move is part of the Digital Egypt strategy, which aims to localise the latest global technologies and offer more advanced and secure services. The NTRA’s initiative also opens new investment opportunities in the IoT sector. Licences are granted in accordance with precise technical and regulatory guidelines to ensure high service quality and sustainability.
The IoT for vehicles enables drivers to utilise navigation systems, tracking services, and emergency assistance features securely and efficiently, ensuring the protection of user data and privacy.
Previously, the NTRA allowed seven global car brands specialising in smart vehicles to operate IoT services for cars in Egypt.
According to Mohamed Shamroukh, CEO of the NTRA, granting the new licences to Mercedes-Benz Egypt is a significant step towards supporting digital transformation and enhancing the smart vehicle ecosystem in the Egyptian market.
“Providing IoT services for cars will contribute to improving road safety and the user experience, as well as supporting better vehicle management and operation,” Shamroukh added. He further explained that the NTRA is committed to establishing clear regulatory frameworks to ensure the safe operation of these services and to adhere to data protection and privacy standards.
