Westconnect deal extends Vodafone Germany’s open access reach to 2m premises

Vodafone Germany and Westconnect have confirmed plans to expand their fibre partnership, paving the way for Vodafone to market gigabit broadband services across Westconnect’s open access FTTH network.

The companies said marketing is expected to start in autumn 2026, initially covering North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and Hesse. Up to 2 million additional residential and business customers in Westconnect’s footprint will be able to order gigabit internet, telephony and TV from Vodafone over Westconnect infrastructure.

The agreement follows a letter of intent signed in October 2025, with both sides now committing to deeper cooperation “in all areas” of fibre deployment. Vodafone positioned the move as a way to expand reach without duplicating networks, leaning into the open access model to improve utilisation and economics for ongoing rollout.

Matthias Lorenz, Vodafone Germany’s Managing Director for the private customer business, said: “We are making the largest gigabit network in the republic even bigger. Up to two million households in the Westconnect expansion area can also choose Vodafone fibre optics in the future. With this cooperation, unnecessary overbuild is avoided. At the same time, we promote consumer-friendly competition in fast internet with such partnerships.”

Westconnect MD Robin Weiand added: “Open Access is our DNA. We are pleased that the citizens in our development areas can now also use Vodafone products.”

Vodafone and Westconnect said the partnership is designed to avoid “overbuild” by sharing fibre infrastructure, which they argue improves network take-up, makes expansion more economical and helps accelerate rollout.

The companies already have live cooperation in parts of Germany. Vodafone said up to 80,000 households, businesses and schools can currently buy Vodafone internet, telephony and TV via the Westconnect network, building on earlier FTTC/FTTH arrangements. The pair also highlighted a longer operational relationship, including the backhaul of more than 100 mobile sites onto Westconnect fibre.
