Bharti Airtel launches AI-powered ‘Fraud Alert’ to combat OTP banking scams

Bharti Airtel has unveiled a new cybersecurity feature, Fraud Alert, aimed at protecting customers from password theft and one-time password (OTP)-related banking fraud.

The operator said it is responding to the “rapidly growing menace” of OTP scams, in which fraudsters trick customers into sharing banking transaction codes, enabling unauthorised access to their accounts and savings.

Airtel described Fraud Alert as an AI-powered system that detects suspicious activity and warns customers in real time. If a bank OTP is identified during a potentially fraudulent incoming call, the network intervenes with an on-screen alert to caution the user.

The service is already live in the Indian state of Haryana and will be rolled out nationwide over the next two weeks in a phased deployment. Airtel had more than 460 million subscribers as of December 31, 2025, according to TRAI data.

The launch builds on Airtel’s broader push to deploy AI-driven solutions to enhance customer security.

Shashwat Sharma, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel India, said the company aims to make Airtel “the safe network,” noting that while OTPs play a foundational role in securing digital transactions, criminal tactics are increasingly undermining their effectiveness. He added that the new autonomous, network-level solution is designed to detect and intervene against fraudulent activity in real time, with trials demonstrating strong accuracy and impact in preventing scams.
