Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) has appointed Maxis as preferred infrastructure and telecoms partner for its East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which Maxis will co-develop with rival telco U Mobile.
Under the agreement announced on Wednesday, Maxis will spearhead delivery of a full-suite connectivity ecosystem across the 665-kilometre route. That includes seamless mobile coverage, including within tunnels and at all stations, managing MRL’s telecoms assets and fibre capacity, providing onboard Wi-Fi and broadband solutions for retailers at ECRL stations, and enterprise push-to-talk services for railway personnel.
Maxis said it has already signed a deal with U Mobile to develop new mobile infrastructure for the project, which it said will ensure that ECRL’s telecoms infrastructure operates as a shared network, allowing users from all mobile network operators to use the network.
Maxis CEO Goh Seow Eng said the ECRL project aligns with the Malaysian government’s digital agenda, and will contribute to the development of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER).
