Oman’s mobile operators excel in 5G, speed, and reliability, says Opensignal

Oman’s three mobile operators — Ooredoo, Omantel, and Vodafone — continue to deliver strong performance across speed, coverage, reliability, and 5G, according to Opensignal’s January 2026 Mobile Network Experience Report, which analysed user data from October 1 to December 29, 2025.

Ooredoo retained its lead in Reliability Experience and emerged as the sole winner for Download Speed Experience and 5G Upload Speed Experience. It also shared awards with Vodafone for Games Experience, 5G Games Experience, and Time on Network, giving it six total accolades. The results reflect Ooredoo’s focus on radio modernisation and advanced 5G antenna trials to improve efficiency, coverage, and throughput.

Omantel dominated in Coverage Experience and 5G Coverage Experience, while also securing outright wins for 5G Video Experience, 5G Download Speed, and Consistent Quality. It shared the Video Experience award with Vodafone. With six awards overall, Omantel’s performance is supported by extensive fibre expansion and a network strategy designed to unlock 5G Standalone capabilities.

Vodafone maintained a strong showing with an outright win in Upload Speed Experience and joint awards for Games Experience, 5G Games Experience, Video Experience, and Time on Network. Its network expansion leverages low-band 700MHz spectrum to improve both outdoor reach and indoor penetration, combined with cloud-based infrastructure and rapid 5G rollout.

The report also highlights the impact of Oman’s nationwide 3G shutdown, completed in 2025 under the direction of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). The transition enabled spectrum refarming, upgrades across more than 5,600 sites, and helped achieve 99 percent 4G coverage and 90 percent 5G coverage nationwide. TRA’s quality-of-service monitoring and field testing further strengthened transparency across performance indicators such as speed, signal strength, call quality, and video streaming.

In video performance, Omantel and Vodafone achieved “Very Good” scores, enabling 1080p or higher streaming with minimal buffering. Ooredoo scored in the “Good” range, supporting smooth 720p playback. Opensignal’s analysis reflects real-world user behaviour across 3G, 4G, and 5G networks, including adaptive bitrate streaming.

Overall, the report underscores Oman’s rapid progress in mobile connectivity, driven by regulatory leadership and sustained investment in network modernisation. The combined momentum across operators positions the Sultanate as one of the region’s most advanced mobile markets.
