The University of Oviedo has completed the installation of a next-generation private 5G network that provides full coverage to the Gijón Campus. Teltronic was responsible for the design and deployment of this advanced technological infrastructure, which positions the academic institution at the forefront of research, talent development, and technology transfer to industry.
It is the only network of its kind in Spain that is open to all campus groups, teaching, and technology transfer. Similar networks exist in some Spanish universities, but they are exclusively for specific research groups and their own lines of work, not as an open service to the community.
This new 5G network operates in stand-alone mode and incorporates all possible technological advances for this type of network, including the ability to use so-called millimeter-wave frequencies, which allow the network to achieve the highest transmission speeds and the lowest latency levels.
Having its own network enables research groups at the Asturian university to work independently from commercial networks, with full control over all network elements, which are normally inaccessible. This feature facilitates its use for research, teaching, and technology transfer under real conditions and with complete control over the network—something essential for advancing in fields such as advanced 5G, industrial automation and robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles and drones, or cybersecurity, among others.
This new infrastructure was presented today at an event attended by Ignacio Villaverde, Rector of the University of Oviedo; Borja Sánchez, Minister of Science, Business, Training and Employment of the Government of Asturias; and the network’s project leaders.
Ignacio Villaverde highlighted that this 5G network represents a “qualitative leap” for the University of Oviedo and for Asturias: “It will allow us to better train our students, boost research in emerging technologies, and collaborate closely with industry to address the challenges of digitalization,” he stressed.
For his part, Borja Sánchez emphasized that this infrastructure places Asturias and its University “at the forefront of research and development in mobile connectivity technology.” Furthermore, “it will be a decisive boost to advance the incorporation of smart technologies into our productive fabric.”
