Telkom Indonesia says telecoms services restored to flood-devastated Sumatra

Telkom Indonesia said that it has completed restoration of network and telecoms services in the Sumatra region that was devastated by floods and landslides last month.

Telkom said that all Telkom Group services in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have returned to stable operation with an availability rate of 99.9% as of the first week of January 2026.

Telkom said connectivity has been restored in part via Wi-Fi access points, existing and mobile base stations, satellite-based internet access, provision of standby and mobile generators, backup power systems, and optimization of transmission and access networks in regions with high geographical challenges.

North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh were decimated by floods and landslides that started in late November 2025. According to government figures, at least 1,140 people across those provinces were killed as of December 30, with over 100 still missing and more than 166,000 homes damaged. Al Jazeera reports that many displaced victims continue to shelter in temporary tents.

In Aceh, which was the hardest hit by the disaster, all 289 sub-districts served by Telkomsel have been reconnected, with at least one site operating in each sub-district.

Telkom also said it is providing free managed Wi-Fi service with a capacity of 100 Mbps for people in Danantara Housing sites in Aceh Tamiang Regency that are being built for communities affected by the disaster.

Telkom Group also said that it has contributed over IDR123.23 billion (around US$7.3 million) in support to disaster recovery efforts as of January 7, which includes free internet posts, logistics assistance, health services, public kitchens, psychosocial support, relief programs and service compensation for affected customers.
