Tunisian and Algerian public broadcasters deepen cooperation on DAB+ and digital radio

Tunisia’s state-owned Radio Tunisienne and Algeria’s public broadcaster Radio Algérienne have signed a twinning and cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two national media organisations, with a strong focus on digital radio technologies such as DAB+. The agreement was signed in Tunis in December during the 23rd session of the Tunisian-Algerian Joint High Commission, which oversees bilateral diplomatic, economic and cultural cooperation.

According to Radio Tunisienne, the partnership is designed to support the transition from analogue to digital radio broadcasting, with DAB+ identified as a priority area for sharing technical expertise. The broadcasters said the cooperation will also cover internet streaming platforms, mobile applications and podcast distribution.

Beyond transmission technologies, the agreement includes joint efforts to digitise and preserve historical audio archives. This will involve sharing knowledge on audio restoration, storage and archiving, as well as developing collaborative editorial projects that reflect the shared cultural heritage of the Maghreb region.

The accord also provides for staff exchanges and training programmes, particularly for engineers and technical teams. These initiatives are intended to strengthen skills related to digital transmission, modern production workflows and next-generation audio services.

Both broadcasters described the agreement as part of a broader strategy to modernise public radio services in North Africa, positioning DAB+ and digital audio as central pillars of future cross-border cooperation and media development.
