Latvian telecoms and technology company LMT Group has secured a central role in the European Union’s second major military robotics programme, iMUGS2, a European Defence Fund backed project aimed at strengthening autonomous battlefield capabilities, Labs of Latvia, a Latvian start-up ecosystem platform and media outlet focused on innovation, entrepreneurship and technology, reported on its website on January 5.
LMT will lead work on 4G and 5G tactical communications as well as command-and-control systems within the project. The company will also be responsible for integrating unmanned aerial systems into a wider system-of-systems architecture, enabling air-ground interoperability.
“iMUGS2 is a key step toward next-generation multi-domain operations. During the project, our team will lead the development of next-generation communication and autonomous system capabilities that enable faster, safer, and more resilient tactical operations. We are proud to apply Latvia’s technological strengths to contribute to Europe’s defence capability and leadership,” said Juris Binde, president of LMT Group.
The iMUGS2 project is coordinated by Milrem Robotics and builds on the earlier iMUGS initiative. Its aim is to develop a scalable, secure and interoperable architecture that allows manned and unmanned platforms to operate together across multiple domains.
Under the programme, LMT will focus on secure battlefield communications, unmanned system integration and interoperability design. The company will also test a Latvian-developed unmanned ground vehicle as part of the project’s operational trials.
The project has a total value of about €55mn, with nearly €50mn provided by the European Defence Fund. It brings together 29 partners from 15 EU member states, with the goal of delivering combat-ready unmanned ground systems and advancing Europe’s military robotics autonomy.
