Egypt is moving to significantly scale up local mobile phone manufacturing as part of a broader push to strengthen its communications and information technology (ICT) sector and position it as a production-led strategic industry.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat said Egypt aims to produce 15 million mobile phones next year, up from 10 million units manufactured in 2025, with plans to begin exporting devices to international markets. Speaking at the Institute for Intelligence and Security Science Studies, Talaat noted that locally produced phones this year achieved a 40 percent local added value.
According to Daily News Egypt, the minister highlighted that 15 international mobile phone brands are now manufacturing devices locally, representing a key milestone in attracting global technology players to Egypt’s production ecosystem.
The manufacturing drive forms part of a wider national strategy to transform the ICT sector into a major contributor to economic growth and exports. Talaat reported that Egypt’s digital exports reached $7.4 billion in 2025, with a target of increasing this figure to $9 billion in the coming period.
He also underlined Egypt’s strategic importance in global data infrastructure, pointing out that 21 international subsea cables currently pass through the country, reinforcing its role as a regional connectivity hub.
On skills development, the government plans to train one million people in technology-related specialisations by 2030, up from 800,000 trainees this year. This effort will be supported through new applied technology schools and the Egypt University of Informatics.
Talaat also referenced progress in digital governance initiatives and job creation within the outsourcing sector. Looking ahead, key priorities for the ministry include completing the nationwide rollout of fibre optic infrastructure and enhancing mobile network coverage following the launch of 5G services.
