Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has announced the launch of Satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) services in the Kingdom, marking a major milestone in its telecommunications landscape. With this move, Bahrain becomes the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council to implement Satellite D2D services, reinforcing its position as one of the most advanced and well-connected nations globally.
The launch follows the completion and publication of a related consultation report and forms a core part of the TRA’s wider strategy to position Bahrain as a global leader in connectivity and digital innovation. The newly authorised technology enables standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, including maritime zones.
The TRA stated that the introduction of Satellite Direct-to-Device services will help ensure continuous access to essential communications, enhancing safety, resilience, and connectivity for citizens, residents, and visitors. By enabling coverage in remote and hard-to-reach locations, the service supports critical communication needs where traditional mobile infrastructure is unavailable.
Commenting on the launch, Philip Marnick, General Director of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, said the authorisation of Satellite D2D services represents a significant advancement in Bahrain’s telecommunications ecosystem. He noted that the initiative strengthens Bahrain’s leadership in digital connectivity and ensures people remain connected beyond terrestrial network coverage, supporting safety, economic activity, and national resilience, while reflecting the TRA’s commitment to delivering world-class telecommunications services.
