NTRA issues urgent warning over unknown international calls and smartphone hacking risks

Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has issued an urgent warning to citizens about increasing hacker attacks targeting smartphones, particularly through unknown international calls and suspicious messages. The alert applies to users of all mobile devices, from 3G to 5G.

Mohamed Ibrahim, the official spokesperson for the NTRA, said the warning aims to protect personal data transmitted via mobile phones, noting that widespread internet connectivity has made smartphones more vulnerable to cyber threats. He explained that malicious links and untrusted applications, often delivered through text messages, remain the primary entry point for hackers.

Ibrahim urged users to avoid opening links from unknown sources, warning that many contain malware capable of stealing data or taking control of devices. He also cautioned citizens not to answer calls from unfamiliar international numbers, as such calls are increasingly being used as part of hacking and fraud attempts.

To reduce risks, the NTRA advised users to set strong, unique passwords for each application, enable SMS-based verification where possible, and remain vigilant against unsolicited messages or calls. The authority said it continues to raise public awareness about everyday digital risks as part of its broader cybersecurity efforts.
