Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and officials from US-based SpaceX discussed on Thursday the remaining steps to issue the necessary permits to the company’s subsidiary Starlink to bring satellite internet to Iraq.
During the meeting held in Baghdad, al-Sudani emphasized the government’s commitment to keeping up with the advancements in information technology and digital transformation through its collaboration with SpaceX and entry into the Iraqi market, which now offers numerous promising investment opportunities.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), al-Sudani stated that Iraq has made considerable progress in attracting several international companies and meeting all of their demands to be able to continue their operations effectively.
The prime minister also stated that the government is committed to maintaining Iraq’s sovereignty in the information technology industry.
The delegation conveyed the company’s enthusiasm for delivering services and collaborating with Iraq in the information technology sector. The team highlighted that SpaceX is prepared to offer satellite internet service shortly after obtaining the official license required to operate in Iraq.
In May, al-Sudani encouraged big technology companies, particularly those based in the United States, to operate in Iraq and engage with the Iraqi private sector as part of the Iraqi government’s transition to digital transformation.
