Play, a technological leader in the Polish telecommunications market, has reached another milestone in developing its mobile network.
The launch of its 13,000th base station symbolically coincides with a historic moment – the operator will cease national roaming at the end of the year. This is further proof of the full technological maturity of the country’s largest mobile network.
Play’s 13,000th base station was launched in Toruń. The choice of this location is also symbolic – the city in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship has been a testing ground for new network technologies for years. In Toruń, Play launched its first LTE transmitters, implemented 5G technology, and conducted numerous pilots and tests.
Station number 13,000 is located in the Mariana Rose Motoarena – Toruń’s speedway stadium. This modern installation supports all available technologies, including 5G, which will significantly increase network coverage and capacity, providing users with even faster and more reliable internet access.
Investments and modernization as the driving force of development
Since the beginning of 2025, Play’s mobile network has expanded by a remarkable 574 base stations. October was a record month for network expansion, with the operator launching 80 new stations. These sites were built in major cities, including Warsaw, Łódź, Gdańsk, Poznań, Kraków, and Rzeszów, as well as popular tourist destinations like Puck, Kołobrzeg, and Bukowina Tatrzańska.
Dynamic network development involves not only new stations but also the consistent modernization of existing infrastructure. The year 2025 is key for Play in terms of strategic network projects, such as replacing 3G technology with newer generations of 4G and 5G and implementing connectivity in the 700 MHz band, which will significantly improve coverage.
The end of the national roaming era – a natural step in network evolution
Achieving technological independence will become a reality at the end of this year, when Play will cease using national roaming. This marks the culmination of a process that began in December 2019.
Access to other operators’ transmitters was a key element of Play’s strategy in the early days of the network. It provided customers with connectivity while its own infrastructure was being expanded. Today, Play provides its services independently across the country.
In recent years, Play has been intensively developing its mobile network, including 5G technology, and expanding its fiber-optic network to offer customers comprehensive and innovative digital services.
