Airtel Malawi launches 5G and VoLTE services

Airtel Malawi officially launched its 5G network in select districts on Tuesday along with the nationwide rollout of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for its 4G network.

Airtel Malawi said its 5G network is live on 56 sites in ten districts, including Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu City, Kasungu, Mangochi, Mchinji Mzimba and Zomba.

Airtel Malawi added that the network’s ultra-low latency and high capacity will enable smart cities, e-health, digital education and advanced enterprise use cases.

The 5G launch comes four months after rival telco TMN launched its 5G service in Lilongwe in July.

As for VoLTE, Airtel Malawi said it is now available across all of its sites across the country with the promise of clearer voice calls, faster call connections and the ability to use 4G data while on a voice call (as opposed to the phone dropping down to 3G or 2G during voice calls).

According to news site Malawi 24, Airtel Malawi MD Aashish Dutt said the rollout of both 5G and VoLTE represents years of deliberate planning and network expansion.

Meanwhile, Airtel Malawi has also been investing in other network enhancements, such as expanded international fibre routes through Tanzania and Mozambique, reinforced local transmission lines, and the rollout of 90 additional sites nationwide, the report said.
