Meta has announced the addition of a significant new feature to WhatsApp for users in the European Union.
According to Meta, users will now be able to communicate directly with users of other messaging applications. This move comes under the EU Digital Markets Act, which instructs large tech companies to make their services interoperable with other platforms.
Meta stated that this feature will be gradually rolled out to European users over the coming months, with only a few external messaging apps initially being compatible.
The company highlighted three key points regarding this feature:
Full security and privacy protection: End-to-end encryption will be maintained even when communicating with external messaging apps.
Simple and clear usage: Users will be clearly informed about the difference between WhatsApp chats and external chats.
Availability only for European users: This feature will be limited to the European region.
The new system will be available on both mobile platforms, Android and iOS. Once activated, European users will see a notification in WhatsApp settings, allowing them to enable or disable the external messaging connection feature.
After this feature is enabled, users will be able to send text messages, voice messages, images, videos, and other files to people communicating via other messaging apps. Experts say this change represents a major step toward making WhatsApp more open and interconnected with other platforms while keeping user data protection a top priority.
