Pakistan Telecommunication Authority upgrades national firewall to strengthen cyber defenses

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a major firewall renewal and upgrade project aimed at fortifying the country’s cybersecurity infrastructure and protecting critical digital systems from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

According to preliminary estimates, the project’s budget ranges between Rs. 40 million and Rs. 120 million, depending on the firewall models, subscription periods, and deployment scope chosen.

The new firewall framework will significantly enhance network visibility, control, and resilience, enabling PTA to better detect and respond to advanced cyberattacks targeting Pakistan’s telecom and digital ecosystems.

The upgrade involves a complete overhaul of the network security infrastructure at PTA Headquarters and regional offices, including the installation of next-generation firewalls (NGFWs), renewal of software licenses, and integration with PTA’s central data centers and monitoring systems.

Once operational, the modernized firewall system will serve as a critical cybersecurity shield, aligning with Pakistan’s broader efforts to secure its digital backbone and reinforce national data protection standards.
