CTTC deploys Boldyn private 5G

Non-profit research institution Centre Tecnologic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) looked set to be a frontrunner in organisations employing private 5G running on mid- and high-band frequencies along with mmWave.

Boldyn Networks is deploying the network, which it stated would be one of the first commercial examples running on all three bands simultaneously.

There is a stock of self-providing frequencies for industrial use available in Spain, it explained.

Mikko Uusitalo, CEO of Europe, said Boldyn Networks is helping companies in Spain to “maximise the use of industrial spectrum through self-provisioning”.

Boldyn Networks is deploying a pair of standalone 5G cores featuring Network Exposure Function and roaming capabilities. It explained the arrangement offers programmability, flexibility and seamless device connectivity.

The CTTC intends to use the private 5G network to test critical communications, autonomous driving and immersive technology experiences.

Its testing programme is funded by Spain’s Ministerio de Asuntos Economicos y Transformacion Digital and the European Union, with the main aim to provide a 5G infrastructure companies can use for testing and validation.

The network is “a significant step forward for our research and development efforts”, CTTC research director and head of the services-as-networks research unit Josep Mangues said.
