BTCL to introduce triple-play, quad-play services in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) is set to introduce triple-play and quad-play services in the country for the first time.

Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, chief advisor’s special assistant on ICT, announced the initiative in a Facebook post on Saturday night.

In telecom marketing, triple-play refers to unlimited video, voice, and high-speed internet services, while quad-play adds wireless connectivity to the package.

Taiyeb wrote that BTCL will provide unlimited voice calls through BTCL’s MVNO, mobile SIMs, and the BTCL Alap IP Phone service, subject to certain conditions.

Unlimited data will be ensured via BTCL’s GPON and ISP connections.

On video services, Taiyeb said optional OTT platforms such as Bong, Chorki, or Hoichoi will offer unlimited entertainment.

He also noted the possibility of adding Netflix or Amazon Prime in the future. The plan aims to address piracy issues faced by OTT platforms in Bangladesh.

To expand access to 5G services, BTCL plans to sell FiG-enabled smartphones in instalments.

Taiyeb said: “Smartphones will be available on a Tk 500 instalment plan with a one-year package and a small initial deposit. This will address the ongoing access-to-device problem.”

BTCL is expected to release further details on this initiative in October.

Taiyeb said the government-owned telecom giant aims to “revolutionise” communication by ensuring access to devices, voice, data, and entertainment.

“We want to remove obstacles caused by limited voice, limited data, limited content and device restrictions in people’s communication and entertainment,” he added.
