Mexico’s Telmex launches TMX5 submarine cable

Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex), a Mexican telecommunications company and a wholly owned subsidiary of telecommunications giant America Movil, with a portfolio that includes fixed line services, broadband internet and submarine cables, says its TMX5 submarine cable has officially launched operations.

The cable is described as a state-of-the-art telecommunications project that links Baja California Sur, a state on the Baja California Peninsula in northwestern Mexico, with the rest of the country.

According to the Mexico Business News website, the cable consists of a 383 kilometre fibre-optic network designed to significantly enhance regional connectivity. It has involved an estimated investment of over US$25 million.

Telmex says that the cable, which will improve the transmission of voice, data, and video services, will strengthen vital sectors such as tourism, commerce, education, healthcare and entertainment.

TMX5 is not only intended to meet a growing demand for digital services but also to provide redundant and alternative routes in the event of major natural disasters, ensuring the region remains connected during emergencies.

Mexico Business News says the installation of the system adhered to strict environmental regulations and was developed in a way that ensured full protection of the marine ecosystem. It received technical and regulatory support from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the Government of Baja California Sur and local authorities.
