Fiji awards 5G licences to its three operators

Fiji’s Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications has officially issued 5G spectrum licences to the country’s three major mobile operators.

Vodafone Fiji, Digicel Fiji, and Telecom Fiji received the licenses, which will take effect from 15 September 2025. However, the 5G rollout will take a bit longer to achieve, happening in three phases between 2025 and 2028.

Phase 1 (2025) will be focus on four major centres of population, business or tourism – including Suva, the capital – that also offer good fibre, power, and network density. Expansion into other areas will take place in Phase two (2026) and Phase 3 (2027 onward).

Vodafone Fiji is the leading operator in the country, serving over 850,000 subscribers and holding a market share of around 85% in Fiji's telecommunications industry. Vodafone Fiji is said to be gearing up for the first phase of its rollout and has already completed extensive testing.

Digicel Fiji has not released subscriber numbers but is part of the Digicel Group, launched in Jamaica in 2001 and now spanning 31 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and Asia Pacific. According to the Fiji Times news service, CEO Farid Mohammed has said the company’s substantial investment in 5G aligns with the government’s clear vision for a connected digital future.

The government is also said to be upgrading rural and maritime networks to 4G.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Hon. Manoa Kamikamica, said the deployment is being carried out strategically and responsibly to support inclusive national development. The Fiji Times news resource quotes him as saying: “This rollout not only addresses local challenges but also positions Fiji as a regional leader in digital transformation.”
