Play, Ericsson expand partnership to advance 5G and digital infrastructure in Poland

Under the agreement reached by telecommunications market leaders, Play announced it will further develop one of the most modern and currently largest mobile networks in Poland.

The infrastructure will be even more energy-efficient and meet the highest connectivity standards. The companies will also develop 5G standalone technology. Currently, nearly half of Play's network is built on Ericsson infrastructure.

Play, a leading telecommunications operator, and Ericsson, a European supplier of high-end network solutions, have concluded an agreement that defines further cooperation between the two companies in the digitization of the Polish telecommunications infrastructure.

Under the signed memorandum, Play and Ericsson declare:

Development of digital infrastructure in Poland through further expansion of one of the most modern and currently largest mobile networks in Poland.

Currently, Ericsson base stations constitute almost 50% of the Play network's radio infrastructure (nearly 6,000 stations). This collaboration will not only increase network coverage and capacity but also address challenges in cybersecurity, system resilience, and sustainable development.

Research cooperation and implementation of innovative 5G solutions for the development of Poland's digitalization.

Play and Ericsson have begun and will continue testing 5G Standalone networks in Białystok. 5G SA is a solution designed for local governments and businesses looking to develop smart city concepts or private campus networks.

Additionally, the companies will continue joint activities at Ericsson's research and development centers in Łódź and Kraków regarding frequency efficiency and energy-saving solutions.

Promoting responsible digitalization with environmental sustainability in mind.

Ericsson's experience shows that 5G can be a catalyst for reducing carbon emissions by leveraging connectivity to increase productivity and operational efficiency across industries and public services. This is an idea that resonates with both companies and will enable customers to get the most out of their networks in the future, including in the context of sustainability challenges.

Play and Ericsson have been collaborating intensively on network development since 2018. These efforts have resulted in increased access to digital services for residents across Poland, improved mobile network quality, reduced carbon footprint through the use of energy-efficient infrastructure solutions, and the construction of one of the most modern 5G ecosystems in the country. This memorandum of understanding will strengthen the alliance between the two companies and maintain the current direction of cooperation.
