Paratus Group has launched Namibia's first privately operated mobile network, a development reported by Reuters. The new network is built entirely on 4G LTE technology and is positioned to compete directly with the state-owned incumbents, MTC and Telecom Namibia.
This entry into the market represents a direct challenge to MTC, which has held a dominant position with over two million subscribers since 1994. The launch aligns with a regional trend of modernizing telecommunications infrastructure. According to data from the IndexBox platform, this shift is accelerating across Southern Africa, mirroring initiatives like South Africa's planned shutdown of its 2G and 3G networks by 2027 to reallocate spectrum for advanced services.
The company has invested 1.42 billion Namibian dollars (approximately $81 million) in the project, targeting a demographic of users seeking faster and more modern mobile solutions. Paratus Group CEO Schalk Erasmus stated the launch is a deliberate step in the company's mission to transform Africa's digital landscape. The operator provides services in 15 countries across the continent.
