MTC Namibia launches commercial 5G services in four locations

MTC Namibia has fired the starting gun in the country’s 5G race, launching commercial services across four locations.

The operator confirmed that 5G connectivity is now available in Ongwediva, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and the capital Windhoek. A phased rollout will see more areas connected in the coming months, although no further locations were disclosed. Typically, mobile operators prioritise populous cities when deploying next-generation networks.

Namibia’s telecoms regulator awarded 5G licences at auction in October 2023, releasing spectrum in the 700MHz and 800MHz bands. Each licence is valid for 10 years.

The Windhoek Observer reported, MTC’s chief technical and information officer Monica Nehemia said: “We are proud to make 5G available on the market. MTC remains committed to leading Namibia’s digital transformation through the provision of reliable, cutting-edge network technology that facilitates access to information, critical services, and communication, thereby bridging the digital divide.

“The connectivity power and seamlessness that come with 5G are exactly what we need in propelling the digitisation of enterprise solutions across the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, cloud computing, and payments, thereby enhancing business operations, efficiency, and fostering innovation and scalability.”
