The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that its planned auction of 3.45GHz spectrum will commence on 5 October. The FCC’s Office of Economics and Analytics and the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau have issued a Public Notice establishing the application and bidding procedures for Auction 110, thus fulfilling Congress’s directive in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, to begin auctioning these airwaves by 31 December 2021.
The spectrum sale will offer up to 4,060 new flexible-use licences in the 3.45GHz-3.55GHz band divided into ten 10MHz blocks licensed by Partial Economic Areas (PEA). In the first phase of the auction (the clock phase) bidders will bid on generic blocks in each geographic area. In the second phase (the assignment phase) they will bid on frequency-specific licence assignments.
