TT-Netvaerket, the joint venture between Danish telecoms operators TeliaSonera and Telenor, has completed the final phase of its Single radio access network (RAN) sharing project. Nokia Networks, which was the sole radio and services provider for the networks merger, claims that this is ‘the first time a network across GSM, 3G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) [platforms] has been supplied to two operators sharing the network and frequencies’. Nokia Networks implemented its Single RAN Advanced platform, which was built around the high-capacity Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, to run all technologies concurrently. The process of combining the two live-traffic nationwide networks – carried out across multiple technologies and frequencies in a multi-vendor core network environment – caused no disruption to subscribers, the Finish vendor said.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in June 2011 Telenor Denmark and rival Telia Denmark entered into an agreement to operate a shared mobile network, and in February 2012 established a common infrastructure company – TT-Netvaerket – to operate the shared infrastructure. In June 2012 TT-Netvaerket was awarded spectrum in the 800MHz band after paying DKK111.5 million (USD16.4 million) for 2×10MHz in the 800MHz band to complement its existing holdings at 2600MHz, which had already been used for the deployment of a 4G 1800MHz/2600MHz network. The merger of Telia and Telenor’s respective 3G/4G networks was completed in April 2014, while the combining of their 2G network infrastructure commenced shortly after.
