DTH holds its own in Spain as IPTV doubles up

With direct-to-home (DTH) still being the second most used technology for TV reception in Spain, IPTV has doubled, now reaching 1.56 million homes, while digital terrestrial television (DTT) holds the throne despite losing over half a million connections.

According to the latest report by SES, satellite technology takes television into 2.66 million homes throughout Spain (16% of registered homes), a figure which has been consistent in recent years. Canal+ subscribers represent 1.62 million while 1.05 million are receiving free-to-air (FTA) satellite TV.

In a panorama dominated by DTT, IPTV has managed to grow by 119%, taking the third place in the ranking below cable. Although seeing slight growth, cable holds a very stable position with 1.43 million, just surpassed by IPTV.

DTT is by far the most used broadcasting technology, especially regarding FTA, with 11.56 million homes receiving TV through the digital terrestrial network, though this is 8.6% less than the 12.06 million homes connected to DTT last year.

"It's good news; satellite, cable and IP technology are growing or at least keeping a stable position in spite of the financial crisis and other obstacles," said Luis Sahún, managing director for Spain at SES. "The trends show a clear road to a changing future with new technologies, high definition and a new and more demanding viewer".
