Sri Lanka's police department has introduced a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to link all police stations in the country.
The introduction of the VPN took place under the auspices of Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon at the Police Headquarters yesterday (02).
The measure to link all police stations through a VPN was taken to enable the police officers to instantly exchange information and aid in preventing crimes, national news agency Lankapuvath reported.
The linking of mobile phones to one network, for the instant exchange of information has been handed over to senior police officials.
The handing over of mobile phones to senior officials above the position of Officer's in Charge of Police Stations took place in parallel to this event. The private sector too contributed to this program.
Expressing views at this function, IGP N.K. Ilangakoon said that they initiated action to use this new technology so that an efficient and quality service could be discharged by the officers.
Further speaking at the inauguration he said 742 police stations and offices would be connected though the system. He revealed that they had trained 1,744 police officers to maintain the system.
The Police Chief added that the system would also have a video conferencing facility through which he could contact senior police officials at a moment's notice.
