BT rolls out high-speed Wi-Fi to RAF Brize Norton and Northolt

High-speed wireless internet access is now available at two major RAF bases.

BT is helping members of the armed forces keep in touch with friends and family by bringing high-speed Wi-Fi to two military bases.

The telecoms giant has announced the launch of fibre optic-based wireless internet connectivity at RAF Brize Norton – home to over 6,000 servicemen and women – and RAF Northolt, where around 2,000 military personnel and civilians are located.

At Brize Norton, the RAF's largest station, BT is delivering speeds of approximately 30Mbps and enough bandwidth to connect a large number of people on multiple devices at the same time.

Virtually the whole base is covered by the Wi-Fi network, from the main airport terminal to the permanent accommodation blocks and communal areas.

Meanwhile, the Northolt Wi-Fi service allows for clear communication channels involving unclassified military, civilian and commercial users.

Bill Holford, Client Partner for Defence at BT Global Services, said: "I've been amazed by some of the stories I've heard about how having access to the internet – something many of us take for granted – has made a real difference, enabling our service personnel to become more operationally and personally effective."
