América Móvil and DirecTV keep growing throughout Latin America's pay-TV market, gathering together 40.5% of the total subscriptions in Q1 2014, which means 0.2% more than last quarter 2013.
According to Dataxis figures - published through the company's news service NexTV - both companies added over 300,000 subs together during the first three months of the year. Carlos Slim's company, which owns 15 pay-TV operations, mostly through Claro services in the region, reached 13.92 million customers, while DirecTV, operating in 14 countries, gathered 11.92 million.
“The two dominant groups in the Latin American market generate a kind of inertia which means their market shares are continuously growing,” said Dataxis' senior analyst Juan Pablo Conti. “They are even covering up each other, which is why AT&T, DirecTV's future owner, will have to sell its shares in América Móvil, thus avoiding media cross property.”
Both groups are followed by Televisa, which has 8.21 million subs and occupies third place in the rankings. Cablevisión (3.47 million), Telefónica (2.84) and MVS Comunicaciones (2.48) complete the region´s top-six pay-TV operators, which gather together over 67% of the market.
