Meta, the American tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has officially launched Meta AI in Urdu for users in Pakistan — a groundbreaking step toward making artificial intelligence tools more inclusive and locally accessible.
The launch took place at the “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation” event, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT). According to Meta’s press release, the initiative aims to accelerate Pakistan’s journey toward digital transformation and make technology available in the nation’s most widely spoken language.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima hailed the launch as a key milestone under the Prime Minister’s Digital Nation Vision. “Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen,” she said. “Our partnership with Meta reflects our commitment to promoting AI education, digital innovation, and inclusivity. The addition of Urdu in Meta AI ensures that no one is left behind in this digital revolution.”
Sarim Aziz, Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s public sector and academia. “We aim to help educational and government institutions drive digital transformation through effective use of AI. We’re delighted that Meta AI in Urdu will now allow local communities to connect with technology in their own language,” he said.
At the event, Meta also unveiled a localized edition of its guide titled “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama,” developed with Deloitte and supported by MoITT. The guide outlines how Meta’s open-source AI model, Llama, can enhance governance, improve public services, and ensure data sovereignty. It also includes successful case studies from across the Asia-Pacific region, including Pakistan.
Furthering its commitment to education, Meta announced an AI Literacy Program in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT, and atomcamp. The program will train 350 university teachers from non-computer science backgrounds in basic AI skills, preparing students for future digital demands.
Meta also introduced the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025 program, which will connect Pakistan’s public institutions with Meta’s latest technologies and best practices. The initiative seeks to foster collaboration between public and private sector experts to promote effective digital transformation nationwide.
