Multi-service company Tele2 has modernized 130 4G base stations throughout Latvia this year, while also installing 5G technology in them. As a result, Tele2 customers now have access to 5G network coverage, which covers almost 90% of the country's territory, approaching the level of 4G coverage.
When modernizing 4G base stations, the latest generation equipment is installed, which improves network capacity. This means that the base stations are much better able to simultaneously serve more mobile communication service users during peak hours.
In Riga, Tele2 has modernized 20 4G base stations, while simultaneously providing an even more powerful 5G network in the capital’s neighborhoods. 4G base stations have also been modernized in other Latvian cities – Daugavpils, Dobele, Liepāja, Jelgava, Jurmala, Rēzekne and Ventspils – as well as in the following regions: Aizkraukle, Alūksne, Augšdaugava, Ādaži, Balvi, Bauska, Cēsis, Dienvidkurzeme, Dobele, Jelgava, Krāslava, Kuldīga, Limbaži, Ludza, Madona, Mārupe, Ogre, Olaine, Preiļi, Rēzekne, Ropaži, Salaspils, Saldus, Saulkrasti, Sigulda, Smiltene, Talsi, Tukums and Valmiera regions.
Although 5G technology is becoming increasingly available throughout the country, the 4G network is still the basic technology in the provision of mobile communications services – it is used for most voice calls and consumes approximately 75% of the entire mobile Internet volume on the Tele2 network.
As previously reported, this year Tele2 will also significantly increase the capacity of the 4G network in low frequencies – by 50%. These frequencies allow mobile signals to be transmitted much further and provide mobile Internet in a much wider area, which is especially important in rural regions.

When modernizing 4G base stations, we are focusing on both Riga and the regions. This year, we plan to install approximately 300 new 5G base stations throughout the country. With the modernization of these 130 4G base stations, which also includes the installation of 5G technology, we are almost halfway to this goal. Total investments in the development of Tele2 this year will reach 20 million euros, most of which will be directed directly to the modernization of the 4G network and the expansion of 5G coverage in the regions of Latvia.
