Huawei and HKT have won the Best VoLTE Innovation award at Informa’s LTE World Summit 2015. HKT operates a territory-wide VoLTE network in Hong Kong with advanced features to enhance user experience of VoLTE service. The award is solid proof of HKT’s success in LTE development, especially on the commercialization of VoLTE service.

HKT is the largest mobile operator in Hong Kong and launched its commercial LTE service in 2012. HKT strives to provide the leading mobile broadband network with the best user experience, of which voice experience is a key component. VoLTE is a voice service running on LTE network, featuring higher quality video calls, clearer sound and faster voice call set-up (around one second for VoLTE to VoLTE calls) over 3G services, as well as instant switching between voice and video calls. HKT launched commercial VoLTE service in May 2014 and started the “All-4G” era with both voice and data service carried on LTE network.

Apart from basic VoLTE deployment, HKT and Huawei have also jointly deployed several innovations for VoLTE service, including the world’s first eSRVCC deployment, which enables smooth handover of VoLTE to 3G when leaving LTE coverage. eSRVCC effectively enhances VoLTE coverage by guaranteeing a good VoLTE user experience at LTE cell edge.

With regards to mobile broadband service, HKT launched Hong Kong’s first LTE-A network in 2014 with a peak throughput of 300Mbps. Further in April 2015, HKT and Huawei jointly announced and demonstrated the world’s first LTE-A network by aggregating three 20 MHz carriers of different base-stations to achieve a peak throughput of 450Mbps.

The Best VoLTE Innovation award provides distinctive recognition of HKT’s continuous efforts in LTE technology innovation. HKT sets a good model for operators around the world to rapidly increase VoLTE deployment and create a better connected world.
