Amazon has debuted a new augmented-reality / data-enhanced broadcast mode for its live sports coverage.
Amazon Prime Vision made its first appearance in the UK during Tuesday night’s coverage of the Champions League clash between Tottenham and Vilarreal. Additional stats, graphics and AR-style visualisations were added on top of the live match feed.
Viewers can take in additional information such as player names, sprint speeds, pass distances, ball speeds, expected goals (xG) metrics, live positioning maps of all players, and momentum indicators.
The visuals are inspired by video games and the kind of graphics younger or more data-oriented viewers might enjoy: overlays that show tactical plays, passing options, etc. They resemble what might normally be saved for the post match analysis.
Amazon relies on camera / sensor systems (like those used in NFL Next Gen Stats) to drive the technology.
The aim is to offer deeper insight and make the viewing experience more engaging, especially for fans who like statistics, tactics, and understanding more of what’s going on under the surface.
Amazon has previously provided a similar service for its NFL in the United States, where Prime Vision was first seen in 2023, picking up an Emmy in the process.
There are now plans to further rollout the coverage into Germany and Italy.
