Telekom expands 200Mbps mobile data coverage along rail routes

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), says it expanded the capacity and coverage of its mobile network at 820 locations nationwide in the last six weeks. The firm rolled out 143 new sites using 4G and 5G frequencies and increased capacity at 677 existing LTE and 5G network sites. Telekom reports that around 95% of the population are now covered by 5G services, with over 9,000 antennas transmitting in the 3.7GHz band. By 2025 5G coverage will be increased to 99% of homes.

Meanwhile, Telekom has also revealed that the expansion of its mobile network along the national railway in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn (DB) is progressing faster than planned. The operator says it is already providing LTE with maximum data rates of 200Mbps on 97% of DB’s main traffic ICE routes. Telekom has built around 300 new cellphone towers and modernised or expanded 700 existing mobile sites to ensure uninterrupted coverage. The two companies teamed up in June 2021 to achieve seamless mobile network coverage along all railway tracks by the end of 2026. Telekom aims to supply all routes with maximum data rates of 100Mbps or 200Mbps.
