Rostelecom Armenia to build a 200-rack data centre

Russian telco Rostelecom has confirmed it plans to build a new 200-rack data centre in Armenia via its wholly-owned subsidiary Rostelecom Armenia (GNC-Alfa). The new facility is scheduled to be operational in early 2024 with the group’s president Mikhail Oseevsky noting: ‘We continue to actively develop in Armenia, where we have a subsidiary and a data centre is currently being built. This will be the first large data centre created according to the most stringent requirements in the country, there is a lot of interest from government agencies. At the beginning of next year, 200 racks with the possibility of a rapid increase in capacity should already be launched.’

Oseevsky also reiterated the Russian telco’s commitment to the Armenian market after having previously set out its stall to sell its business there back in 2021. In March this year Rostelecom dropped plans to divest the subsidiary and instead ‘to develop it actively’. Founded in 2007 – with Rostelecom taking a majority stake in 2012 – Rostelecom Armenia provides fixed broadband internet access, fixed voice telephony, IPTV and other services, and its 2,500km fibre-optic network covers 80% of the territory.
