Virgin Media Ireland introduces 2Gbps connectivity commercially

Virgin Media Ireland has announced the commercial launch of 2Gbps downlink speeds, according to Tech Buzz Ireland. It is understood that the operator’s new fastest fixed broadband service has initially been made available in towns including Tralee, Killarney and Letterkenny, as well in those areas where the operator is upgrading its cable network to full fibre, such as Dublin, Cork and Louth.

Commenting on the new product launch, Virgin Media Ireland CEO Tony Hanway was cited as saying: ‘At Virgin Media, we always aim to deliver the very best experiences to our customers through our broadband and television services. Today’s announcement marks a step-change for our business as we will now offer superfast and reliable fibre broadband services in new regions across Ireland, resulting in greater consumer choice and increased competition.’

Earlier this month Virgin Media Ireland confirmed the progress made so far under its fibre upgrade project, revealing that by the end of Q1 2023 around 260,000 premises had been passed with fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology, while it noted that build costs had been in line with its expectations. At the same time the operator reported a continued demand for higher speed services, stating that during the first quarter of 2023 more than 20% of its new fixed broadband subscription sales had been for a service offering downlink speeds of 1Gbps, while more than 90% of sales were for a service offering speeds of either 500Mbps or 1Gbps.
