Tele2 Estonia kicks off mmWave 5G trial

Tele2 Estonia has commenced its trial of mmWave 5G with a new 26GHz base station in the town of Lagedi, near the capital of Tallinn.

Alongside rivals Telia and Elisa, Tele2 obtained 800MHz of spectrum in the 26GHz band earlier this month. It spent EUR1.6 million (US$1.7 million) on the airwaves despite the fact that there are currently no devices commercially available in Estonia capable of operating via the 26GHz band.

Tele2 technology director Tanel Sarri said: “We are dealing with frequencies whose real capacity we will only see after some time, as equipment updates must also catch up with the development of the network. Today, there are no phones or routers on sale in Estonia that support the use of these frequencies.”

“These frequencies are strategically very important and we are currently using them in the development of the 5G network, but in the future we will certainly also use them for the following networks, for example 6G.”
