Telekom Malaysia expands fiber broadband reach

Telekom Malaysia completed its new fiber optic hub across the northern regions of Sabah and Sarawak to connect remote locations situated there.

In a statement, Telekom Malaysia said the construction of the hub or point of presence (PoP), enables subscribers to be less reliant on mobile internet and experience faster services in homes.

Telekom Malaysia is constructing broadband hubs as part of the government’s Twelfth Malaysia Plan, a development roadmap to better the lives of Malaysian citizens, in which the government pledged to have 4,370 PoPs built by 2025. The majority of PoPs (4,323) will be installed near rural schools and 47 close to industrial areas.

In phase two of its PoP building project with the government, Telekom Malaysia has been tasked with constructing 174 sites in the central region of Malaysia.

Shazurawati Abdul Karim, executive vice president of Telekom Malaysia’s B2B arm TM One, said the enhanced connectivity will deliver improved economic development and development of new infrastructures such as those for 5G.

“The presence of PoP can attract technology companies, start-ups and other businesses that require a high-speed internet connection to operate. This can create more job opportunities, increase innovation, and stimulate economic growth in local communities,” added Shazurawati.
