Vianet launches 2Gbps XGS-PON connection

Nepalese ISP Vianet Communications has announced the launch of the country’s first multi-gigabit broadband connection based on the latest XGS fibre technology with the unveiling of its 2Gbps ‘XGS-Extreme’ packages.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the company said the new connections were made possible by an upgrade from GPON to 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network (XGS-PON) technology, which can deliver symmetrical speeds of up to 10Gbps compared with GPON’s support of maximum speeds of 2.4Gbps (download) and 1.2Gbps (upload).

The new packages will initially be available in selected areas of the Kathmandu valley, including Lazimpat, Panipokhari, Maharajgunj, Chandol, Gairidhara, and Samakhusi in Kathmandu, as well as Jawalakhel, Ekantakuna, Manbhawan, Kumaripati, Mahalaxmisthan, Pulchowk, Kupondole, Jhanmsikhel, and Dhobighat in Lalitpur. Vianet plans to expand coverage of its XGS products throughout the valley ‘very soon’. Customers have a choice of two XGS-Extreme subscription plans enabling connection speeds of 1Gbps (XGS-Extreme Pro) or 2Gbps (XGS-Extreme Pro Plus), both of which include access to the company’s ‘ViaTV’ IPTV service.
