Rural rollouts help push Swedish fiber coverage

Gigabit-capable fibre-optic networks were in the vicinity of 97% of Swedish homes as of October 2022, up two percentage points year-on-year. A study by the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (Post & Telestyrelsen, PTS) found that the figure dropped to 65% when looking solely at rural areas, but that was up more than five percentage points on the October 2021 result. In the mobile sector, 57% of households were covered by 5G networks by October 2022, up from 20% twelve months before.

The Swedish government offers annual broadband support packages to telcos, municipal authorities and community associations to help fund network rollouts in rural areas. SEK1.25 billion (USD119 million) was allocated in 2022.
