Tele2 activates 5G in Vilnius

Tele2 Lithuania has announced the activation of 5G services using its recently acquired spectrum in the 700MHz and 3.5GHz bands. The technology is currently available for residents of the capital Vilnius but will be expanded to other main cities by the end of the year.

‘We can officially announce that 5G is already working on our network. We have been preparing for this launch for a long time and consistently, so now that the permission has been received, the intensive phase of development of the commercial 5G network begins,’ stated Petras Masiulis, Tele2’s general director for the Baltic countries, adding: ‘First of all, the residents of the capital and other big cities will test the new generation technology. As before, we will strive to ensure that our customers receive the best quality at an attractive price.’

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Tele2 paid EUR3.9 million (USD3.7 million) for one 2×10MHz block of 700MHz spectrum and EUR3.0 million for 100MHz of 3.5GHz spectrum at auction last month. The licences are valid for 20 years. The mobile operator is installing 5G network equipment in all Baltic countries together with Nokia.
