Telekom to deploy 100,000 FTTH connections in Cologne by 2025

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile operating unit of Deutsche Telekom, is aiming to provide 100,000 homes in Cologne with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections by 2025.

Telekom already supplies large parts of Cologne with super vectoring technology, which enables maximum download speeds of 250Mbps, but the new FTTH network will be able to support rates of up to 1Gbps. Rollout has already begun in the Weiden district of Cologne and construction and pre-marketing will begin in Loevenich and Bayenthal before the end of this year. The Cologne deployment will contribute towards Telekom’s plan to roll out more than ten million FTTH connections in Germany by 2024.

Srini Gopalan, Chief Executive of Telekom Deutschland, said: ‘Many people and companies in Cologne will benefit from our expansion, because we ensure competition and provider diversity in the network of the future. Our fibre-optic network is open to other companies. We have long been committed to the idea of free network access, so-called Open Access.’
