BIPT extends 2G, 3G licences until year-end

Telecoms regulator the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT) has extended the 2G and 3G spectrum licences held by Proximus, Telenet and Orange Belgium until the end of December, to give it time to finalise the new 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz permits auctioned during the summer. The 2G and 3G licences which were originally due to expire on 15 March 2021 had already been extended by three six-month periods until 15 September 2022 to ensure continuity of services.

The operators will once again be liable for a one-off fee of EUR51,644 (USD51,567) per MHz per month for the 900MHz band (including user rights for the 1800MHz frequencies) and EUR20,833 per MHz per month for the 2100MHz band. This means Proximus will pay around EUR6.67 million, Orange EUR6.35 million and Telenet EUR5.77 million.
