PLDT continues drive to expand Philippines cable connectivity

Philippines-based integrated telecommunications giant PLDT has announced plans for the construction of a cable landing station and a subsea cable system.

The aim is said to be to serve the hyperscaler industry, whose demand has been on the rise with the accelerated use of digital platforms.

The landing station, which is under way and to be completed by 2024, is to be PLDT’s fourth cable landing station; it will be sited in Baler, Aurora. According to Philippines website inquirer.net, the landing station “will supplement PLDT’s international gateway in the northern and eastern borders”.

PLDT also plans to complete the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) system, by the end of next year. This system will link the country with China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

PLDT says it had been working with government agencies to position the Philippines as the next hyperscaler hub in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also targeting cloud services and start-up ecosystems in the Philippines.

Another important part of PLDT’s growth plans is the 14,000-kilometre US-Transpacific Jupiter Cable System, which, as we reported in June, PLDT has recently activated, boosting its extensive fibre network.

The project, which links the country to the landing station in Daet, Camarines Norte, is expected to provide even more terabits per second capacity to customers, along with cable diversity in the event of undersea cable cuts.
